Book Harvest's Daniele Berman returns to share with us what's happened in the year since they've reached their one-millionth book!
At Book Harvest, we’re all about making sure ALL kids are growing up with bookshelves and bedside tables overflowing with stories to ignite their imaginations and fuel their dreams. And we’re focused on making sure parents and families have the support they need to help their kids grow into eager readers.
At this moment one year ago, our team was celebrating the moment we gave away our one-millionth free book. All throughout the fall of 2018, as we watched the book numbers tick up and the days count down, we rode a rollercoaster of emotions: teary thankfulness for all the donors who had helped us get to this moment; giddy surprise that we had actually reached 900,000, then 950,000, then 990,000 -- who could’ve dreamed it?; lofty dreaminess about what our next million books would bring...and then it happened.
On November 12, 2018, at a home visit with a family enrolled in our Book Babies program, our home visitor gave a book-loving two-year-old a copy of The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson: our one-millionth book.
And then we celebrated! We celebrated as a staff team, with our volunteers, with our board, with our donors, with our partners, with everyone who attended our Dream Big celebration on MLK Day 2019, with pretty much anyone who walked in our door...in fact we’ve barely stopped celebrating since! In the meantime, even as we’ve celebrated all one million books we have given away -- and ALL the donors and ALL the volunteers and ALL the sponsors and ALL the partners and ALL the readers who made that moment and so many others like it possible -- we’ve been very busy with lots of other things!
Since that millionth book moment a year ago, we have
And if you were to ask any of our staff members or board members or volunteers, they would all tell you the same thing: we’ve just barely gotten started.
Which means if you’re someone who believes book ownership should be a right and not a privilege for all kids; if you’re someone who can’t imagine bedtime without a story; if you’re someone who knows how books take kids on adventures to worlds beyond their own; if you’re someone who has ever read a book and recognized herself and her life in the story, we want you to join us in making sure every child in our community feels the same way. How?
We hope you’ll join our big Book Harvest family if you haven’t already. And we look forward to celebrating two million books -- and more! -- with you soon.
The Bulls of Durham
"The Bulls of Durham" living history book. Launched on April 10th, 2019, Durham's 150th Anniversary.
"The Bulls of Durham" living history book blends Durham's rich history with stories and perspectives of our city's greats that are continuing to build upon that history. And in this way, this is the story of Durham, North Carolina through the bulls' eyes.
Learn how a city that literally started from a tobacco seed in the ashes of the Civil War grew into the best city on earth. Discover how a stolen bull brought about a history shifting, global tobacco empire; and how 150 years later that relates to a British mustard company having beef with Sheila. #NotSorry
Find out the backstory to how the now hippest, foodiest, tech-hub of the South also gave rise to the bullpen, billboards, branding and baseball cards. Delve into our city's strong Black history that proves "Do It Like Durham" isn't a passing trend and will give you a profound sense of reverence walking down Parrish Street.
Best of all, see the common thread that runs through the stories of teachers, politicians, business owners, hip-hop artists, painters, activists, historians, architects and the real Bull City OG's. Hint: it's the BULLief that in Durham anything is possiBULL.
Welcome to Durham the incrediBULL place where grit meets grace. Here all you have to have is a dream and faith the size of a tobacco seed, because well, tobacco seeds build global empires, not mustard seeds.
Project book launch date: April 10, 2019 - Durham's 150th Anniversary.
